TOPIC: ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY

INTRODUCTION: In previous lessons, we established that the environment means our surroundings, everything around us which is majorly living and non-living things. We also established that man is constantly interacting with the environment and that this interaction has contributed greatly to the degrading conditions of the environment. In this lesson today lesson, we will be learning about environmental quality.

 

Meaning of Environmental Quality

Environmental quality involves maintaining a balance between human activities and the healthy conditions of the environment. Even though some of these human activities are processes meant for development, maintaining balance is essential to ensure the survival and general well-being of living things in the environment.

The environment is endowed with a lot of natural resources. Man exploits these resources and sometimes his activities affects the healthy state of the environment.

 

Healthy Environment: There is need to maintain a healthy physical environment. The physical environment is made up of the gaseous portion, (atmosphere) the solid portion (land…lithosphere) and the liquid portion (water…hydrosphere). The health of all these must be maintained and preserved.

 

Advantages of a healthy Environment

  1. It ensures the safety of people that lives in it.
  2. Plants and animals living in the environment are preserved.
  3. There will be economic growth and progress for all
  4. Social development of people is guaranteed.
  5. It promotes tourist attraction.
  6. The health of people is also guaranteed.

 

Disadvantages of an Unhealthy Environment

When Environment is not cared for and it becomes unhealthy, it comes with a lot of disadvantages. They are:

  1. When the environment is polluted (land, air or water), it brings health hazards
  2. Degraded environment like flood and erosion make the environment unpleasant
  3. Deforestation endangers the habitat of some animals also affects the air we breathe in.
  4. Some plants and animals are affected, some are even killed.
  5. The death of some organism affects the general ecosystem.
  6. Air pollution cause several illnesses.
  7. Noise pollution makes people jittery, agitated, exhausted etc.
