UNITS AND SYMBOLS OF TEMPERATURE SCALE
INTRODUCTION
We previously learned what heat and temperature means. In this topic, we shall be learning About various temperature scales and their units.
What is a unit measurement?
A unit of measurement is a definite size of a quantity or scale. For every form of measurement, there is a standard unit for them.
UNIT OF TEMPERATURE
- The unit of measuring temperature on the Celsius scale is degree Celsius, written as
- The unit of measuring temperature on the Fahrenheit scale is degree Fahrenheit, written as
- The unit of measuring temperature on the Kelvin scale is written as K.
SYMBOLS OF TEMPERATURE SCALES
Thermometers have two points (lowest fixed point and highest fixed point). We have different temperature scales. The most common of them are:
- Celsius Scale. It is from 0°C to 100°C.
- Fahrenheit Scale. It is from 32°F to 212°F.
- Kelvin scale. It is from 273K to 373K.
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DEGREE CELSIUS AND DEGREE FAHRENHEIT
Difference in boiling or freezing point and degree size
Temperatures can be converted easily from one scale to the other using the appropriate conversion formula:
- Fahrenheit to Celsius Conversion Formula C = 5/9 (°F-32)
- Celsius to Fahrenheit Conversion Formula F= 9/5 (°K-273)+32
- Kelvin to Fahrenheit Conversion Formula F= 9/5 (°K-273)+32
- Fahrenheit to Kelvin Conversion Formula K= 5/9 (°F-32)+273
- Celsius to Kelvin Conversion Formula K= °C+273
USES OF THERMOMETER
- To measure temperature relayed by electronic sensors during COVID-19 pandemic
- To measure the temperature of humans during checkups
- To measure the temperature of animals when sick
- To measure the temperature of ovens while baking
- To measure the temperature of swimming pools to make them comfortable
- To measure the temperature in incubators while hatching eggs
- To measure the temperature of factories to ensure safety in the workplace
- To measure indoor and outdoor temperatures during weather reports
TAKING MEASUREMENT WITH CLINICAL THERMOMETER
The following are ways to use clinical thermometer for measurement:
- Shake the thermometer to ensure all the mercury is at the bottom to prevent inaccurate reading.
- Place the thermometer under your tongue or armpit for it to stabilize.
- Place the forearm across the chest and ensure the upper arm is resting against the patient’s side.
- Leave the thermometer in place for 5 minutes, to ensure accurate reading.
- Remove the thermometer, read, and immediately record the temperature on the record chart or note.
EVALUATION
Identify and write the units and symbols of temperature.
Use the thermometer to measure your body temperature.
