In today’s class, we will be talking about meaning and usefulness of earthworm. Enjoy the class!

Farmers need the action of some organisms for their crops to grow very well. One of such organisms is the earthworm.

ACTIVITY:

Can you identify the organism in the picture below? Describe what you think the organism is doing?

What Is An Earthworm?

An earthworm is a long, moist worm-organism that lives in the soil. The body is divided into segments that allow it to crawl on the ground. They do not have back bones. Earthworms have a pointed end which it uses to open the ground.

Usefulness Of Earthworm

Earthworms are very useful to farmers in so many ways. Some of those ways include,

  1. They make air enter into the soil through the holes they make when they enter the ground.
  2. They help to add nutrients to the soil by pushing dead leaves and their feaces into the soil.
  3. Rain water enters the ground easily through the holes they create.
  4. They make it easier for plant roots to grow through the holes they create.
  5. Earthworms help to maintain the soil fertility.

EVALUATION

  1. How would you describe an earthworm?
  2. State four usefulness of earthworm to a farmer and his planting activities.
