Mineral Salts

Welcome to class, we will be talking about mineral salt. I am sure that as you follow up you will enjoy the class.

Like we learnt in previous lessons, there are six classes of food. They are called nutrients. In the last three weeks, we have learnt about three of them: carbohydrates, proteins and fats and oils. These three are called macronutrients because they are needed in large quantities by the body. In today’s lesson we’ll be learning about one of the micronutrients called mineral salts

Minerals

Mineral salts are referred to as welfare food substances because they are essential for the well being of the animals and people.

Sources Of Mineral Salts

Sources of mineral salts include bone meal, milk, vegetables, fruits, fish meal, wheat gems, grasses etc.

Examples of minerals include: calcium, Phosphorus, Magnesium, Sulphur, Iron, Iodine etc.

Importance Of Mineral Salts

  1. Minerals are needed in various quantities to ensure good health.
  2. They are present in muscles for muscle contractions
  3. They prevent diseases from invading our bodies.
  4. They promote body growth.
  5. They help in the digestion and assimilation of food.
  6. They prevent dehydration.
