Classification Of Crop Plants

Welcome to class.

CLASSIFICATION ACCORDING TO THEIR USES

We have in previous lessons learnt classification of crop plants based on their forms ie (monocot and dicot plants). Today we will learn about classification based on their uses. In this classification, crops are divided into the following categories:

  1. Cereal Crops

These are in the grass family. They are grown for their seeds or grains. They are mostly monocotyledons. They are grown mostly because of their seeds which are rich in carbohydrates and used mainly for food by man and animals. Examples are rice, maize, wheat, millet, oats, barley, guinea corn etc.

  1. Legumes:

They are grown mainly for their fruits which are called pods. The pods contain seeds. These crop plants are rich in proteins. They are mostly dicotyledons. They are also called Pulses.

Examples are cowpea, soybeans, groundnut, pigeon pea, kidney beans etc

3. Root Crops:

These are crop plants that store food in their roots. They are grown for their enlarged underground parts which are harvested, they are important sources of carbohydrates.

Examples are sweet potatoes, cassava, carrot etc

  1. Tuber Crops

These crop plants store food in their stems hence they are grown for their stems. The crops are rich sources of carbohydrates. Examples are yam, cocoyam, sweet and irish potatoes, sugarcane etc

Other groups of crop plants based on their uses are

  • Vegetable Crops eg pumpkin leaves, spinach, bitter leave etc
  • Fruit Crops eg mango, orange, guava etc
  • Beverage Crops. Used to produce drinks. eg cocoa, coffee, tea
  • They are used to add flavour to food. eg ginger, pepper, onion, curry etc
  • Oil Crops eg oil palm, melon, groundnut, coconut soybeans, etc
  • Fibre Crops eg cotton, jute, sisal, kenaf, kapok.
