Crop plants are the plants grown by the farmer intentionally for a specific purpose. All crop plants are in the class of flowering plants. There are two divisions of flowering plants namely monocotyledons and dicotyledons. Cotyledon is a seed leaf.

Monocotyledon Plants

These are plants with one seed leaf or one cotyledon. Examples are maize, millet, guinea corn, rice, oil Palm, wheat, coconut, plantain etc

Characteristics Of Monocotyledons

  1. They have one seed leaf
  2. They have fibrous root system
  3. They have single erect stem without branches
  4. They have narrow leaf blades
  5. During germination, the cotyledon is retained below the soil.

These are plants that have seeds with two seed leaves or cotyledons. Examples are cowpea, cocoa, soybeans, amaranthus, fluted pumpkin, pepper etc

Characteristics Of Dicotyledon Plants

  1. They have two seed leaves.
  2. They have a tap root system.
  3.  They have a main stem with many branches
  4. They have broad leaf blades.
  5. During germination, cotyledon shootout to the soil surface.
