Processes Of Soil Formation(Rock Weathering)

Welcome to class.

The process of rock soil formation is called weathering. The processes of soil formation are the various processes that lead to the formation of soil from the parent material.

Weathering: This is the process which breaks down rocks into smaller finer particles to form soil.

The Process Of Soil Formation Include

  1. Physical Process
  2. Chemical Process
  3. Biological Process

 Physical Process

This involves the splitting of the rocks into smaller fragments. The agents of physical process are temperature, water(rainfall), wind, ice(glaciation).

ACTIVITIES

  1. ————- is the breaking down of rocks to form soil. a) weather  b) weathering  c) ice
  2. The process of soil formation is called ———.  a) weathering.  b) temperature.  c) wind
  3. The process of soil formation include —— and ———

Chemical Processes

Chemical processes lead to change in the chemical composition of the rock. It involves the reaction of rock minerals and other elements. To form another mineral.

Biological Processes

These processes are associated with the influence of plants and animals on rocks. Agents of biological weathering include:

  • Plants vegetation – plants growing on cracks of rocks give pressure causing the rock to break
  • Soil Organism – these are animals like earthworm, termites, crickets, rodents. Their burrowing activities lead to fragmentation of rocks
  • Man – Human activities such as mining, road construction, etc lead to breakdown of rocks into smaller fragments.

EVALUATION

  1. List four agents of chemical processes.
  2. ———- is the chemical reaction of water with rock minerals.  a) hydrolysis.  b) carbonation   c) man
  3. The influence of plants and animals on rocks is ——– processes.  a) chemical processes.  b) Biological Processes.  c) Physical Processes.
  4. Which of these activities of man breakdown rocks into small pieces.  a) walking   b) farming.  c) mining
  5. Biological Processes include a)——————- b)——————— c)———————
