BASED ON STOMACH TYPE

 Farm animals are animals reared by man for the purpose of getting products like meat, eggs, milk etc.

Farm animals can be classified using different criteria. Based on their digestive system, farm can be classified into:

  • Ruminant or Polygastric animals and
  • Non Ruminant or Monogastric animals

 ACTIVITY

Identify the animal in the picture below. What does it feed on? Can you describe how it feeds or chews?

Ruminant Animals

Ruminant animals are farm animals which possess four stomach compartments. They are said to have a complete stomach. They can ruminate or chew the cud. After eating the grass, it stays in the rumen for a while before it is brought back and then chewed before it is then digested. Examples of ruminant animals are sheep, cattle, goats and camels.

 

Non-ruminant Animals

These are farm animals which possess only one compartment in their stomach. They do not ruminate. They swallow food once and do not bring it back to their mouth to chew it again. They have simple stomachs and do not digest cellulose and fibre properly. Examples include: Pig, Rabbit, Poultry, Birds, etc
