Welcome to class.
CLASSIFICATION BASED ON MODE OF FEEDING
In the previous lesson, we classified farm animals based on the type of their stomach or digestive system. In this lesson, we will be classifying farm animals based on their mode of feeding. Feeding or nutrition is a characteristic of all living things. However each organism has a specific mode or method of feeding.
Based on the kind of food they eat, farm animals can be classified into three, which are:
- Herbivores
- Carnivores
- omnivores
Herbivores: These are animals that eat mainly grasses, leaves, chaff, and other plant materials. Examples are cattle, sheep and goat. There are other animals that are herbivores but are not farm animals eg zebra and giraffe
Carnivores: These are animals that feed on flesh and other animals. Examples are cats and dogs. These are domestic animals like farm animals reared by man. There are other wide animals that feed on flesh like examples are Lion, leopard etc
Omnivores: These are animals that eat both plant materials and flesh of other animals. Examples are Pigs, Rabbit, guinea pig, Poultry etc
