Welcome to class.

RESOURCES DISTRIBUTION

Resources are used to further production.

Types of Resources

  • Land: This is the free gift of nature that cannot be moved. Many other resources are in the land like gold, oil, coal, etc.
  • Labour: This is the human resources that includes the use of mental and physical efforts.
  • Capital: This is money, equipment and machines that are used in the production of goods and services.
  • Entrepreneur: This is the manager. The man that coordinates all the other resources.

Reasons for Uneven Distribution of Resources

  • Nature: Resources are made by God and they occur naturally in our environment. Man does not have any control over them.
  • Lack of Access: Men cannot access the natural resources which are in the rock, under the ground and in the water.
  • Politics: Areas that people are not well represented in political offices may not get enough resources distributed to them
  • Location of raw materials: Industries that need the raw materials will be located near the raw materials.
  • Market: Industries producing certain products will be more concentrated in areas that have raw materials needed.

Problem of Over-concentration of Industries

  1. Unhealthy Environment: Dirt and pollution from large industries in an area makes the environment unhealthy.
  2. High cost of living: Things are usually expensive in areas where industries are over concentrated.
  3. Housing shortage: Housing becomes difficult because of too many people living in areas with many industries.
  4. Outbreak of Illness: Most industrial wastes from industries are dangerous to health. This could cause outbreak of diseases and sickness.
  5. Pollution: Wastes from industries make the air, land, water and soil dirty and unsafe for people.

How to Ensure Even Distribution of Resources

  • Provision of Social Amenities: Social amenities like electricity, good roads, pipe borne water, etc. should be provided by government in all areas of the country.
  • Good policy: Rural development and integration policy should be introduced by government to encourage companies to go other parts of the state.
  • Incentives: Government should provide incentives for those areas where the resources are found.
  • Fairness and equity: Government should ensure that everybody enjoys the proceeds from sales of resources.
