Meaning of Drug Abuse

Drug Abuse is simply defined as the use of drugs and other substance without the advice of a doctor or pharmacist. The World Health Organization (WHO) defined drug abuse as a persistent or sporadic excessive drug use in consistent with or unrelated to acceptable medical practice.

Factors Contributing to Drug Abuse

• Ignorance
• Peer Pressure
• Inability to resist the temptation

Effects of Abuse of Stimulants

Psychological effects of stimulants include:

• Restlessness
• Convulsion
• Mental disorder
• Loss of appetite
• Sleeplessness
• Dependence
• Withdrawal

Socio-economic effects of stimulants include:

• Poor work performance
• Debts
• Stealing
• School drop out
• Fraud
• Armed robbery
• Social outcast
