ROLES PLAYED BY FAMILIES

Family members play an important role in marriage OF THEIR CHILDREN. These are:

  • They give advice to their children.
  • They find information about the partner.
  • They offer suggestions on issues.
  • They encouraged them when they are confused.
  • They organize the marriage ceremony.

Unhealthy Marriage Practices

  • Early Marriage: Giving a young girl out in marriage to an old man.
  • Same Sex Marriage: Marriage between people with the same sex.
  • Trial Marriage: This is when a man and a woman live together with the intention of marrying each other.
  • Forced Marriage: This is when a man and a woman are forced to get married when there is no love between them.
  • Elopement: This is when a lady runs away with a man without the approval of marriage from her parents.
  • Wife Swapping: Exchange of wives by men.
  • Wife Inheritance: This when the wife of a deceased husband is inherited by the younger or elder brother of the dead man.
  • Promiscuity: Sleeping with men for money.
  • Exclusion of women in marriage decision.
  • Female Genital Mutilation: This is circumcision of girls in order to prevent them from enjoying sex.
  • Widowhood Practices: The wife of a deceased relative may be forced to marry a member of her husband family.
