ROLES PLAYED BY FAMILIES
Family members play an important role in marriage OF THEIR CHILDREN. These are:
- They give advice to their children.
- They find information about the partner.
- They offer suggestions on issues.
- They encouraged them when they are confused.
- They organize the marriage ceremony.
Unhealthy Marriage Practices
- Early Marriage: Giving a young girl out in marriage to an old man.
- Same Sex Marriage: Marriage between people with the same sex.
- Trial Marriage: This is when a man and a woman live together with the intention of marrying each other.
- Forced Marriage: This is when a man and a woman are forced to get married when there is no love between them.
- Elopement: This is when a lady runs away with a man without the approval of marriage from her parents.
- Wife Swapping: Exchange of wives by men.
- Wife Inheritance: This when the wife of a deceased husband is inherited by the younger or elder brother of the dead man.
- Promiscuity: Sleeping with men for money.
- Exclusion of women in marriage decision.
- Female Genital Mutilation: This is circumcision of girls in order to prevent them from enjoying sex.
- Widowhood Practices: The wife of a deceased relative may be forced to marry a member of her husband family.
