Marriage is the union between a man and a woman to become husband and wife.

Traditional marriage is the union of a man and a woman in a traditional way. Traditional marriage is a very integral part of African culture. It involves not only the couple getting married but their families as well. The different types of the marriage ceremony serve as opportunity for the members of both families to meet and approve of each other.

Features of Traditional Marriage

  • It is the marriage of two people contracted by the families.
  • It is a communal activity, therefore members of both families as well as their communities, are involved and present in preparations.
  • Both bride and groom are outfitted in full traditional attire.
  • The marriage ceremony is usually performed in native language.
  • The husband pays a bride price on the arranged day to the family of the bride.
  • The couple families offer prayers for fertility and long life for the bride and groom.
  • Gifts are exchanged- both kolanuts, drinks, food, etc.
  • Man is allowed to marry many wives by tradition.

Values of Traditional Marriage

  • The couples protect the good names of their families.
  • They respect each other and their in-laws.
  • There is friendship between the two families.
  • There is truthfulness and integrity between the man and his wife.
  • There is a bond between the couple and their families.
