Welcome to class, I hope you enjoyed the last class. Today we will be talking about cleaning the kitchen and store. Follow me closely and you will understand what we are about to talk about.

Kitchen: This one of the functional area of the home used as centre for food storage, preparation, and service. We cook our meals in the kitchen as well as washing the utensils and serving food.

Types of Kitchen

  • Modern kitchen
  • Traditional kitchen

Reasons For Cleaning The Kitchen And Store

  • We clean the kitchen to prevent household pests
  • To prevent odor
  • To avoid failing due to slippery floor

Care of the Kitchen:

It requires daily and weekly cleaning – removal of cobwebs, sweeping, dusting and washing with soap and clean water the kitchen utensils and equipment.

Daily Cleaning/Care of kitchen

  • Open the windows to air the kitchen
  • Sweep down cobwebs and dusts from ceilings and walls
  • Sweep the floor
  • Wash any dirty plates and utensils
  • Clean the sink, draining board and the wall around it
  • Wipe the stove or cooker
  • Dust other surfaces in the kitchen Mop the floor
  • Arrange the utensils
  • Empty the dust bin or waste basket
  • Sweep out the inside of the bin or basket using a stiff broom or brush
  • Clean the broom or brush and put away properly.

Weekly Cleaning/Care of Kitchen

  • Open the windows to air the kitchen
  • Take out the kitchen tables, chairs, pots, pans, etc. Clean each utensil according to type.
  • Sweep down cobwebs and dusts from ceilings and walls
  • Sweep out the food store
  • Scrub the storage shelves and cupboard or cabinet thoroughly. Leave to dry.
  • Clean the cooker or stove thoroughly.
  • Clean the refrigerator/freezer if available
  • Clean the sink, draining board and the wall around it
  • Scrub the floor according to type
  • Line the shelves with old newspapers
  • Bring in the furniture and utensils. Arrange them properly.
  • Dispose of refuse properly
  • Scrub the dust bin or basket using a stiff broom or brush
  • Clean the broom or brush and put away properly.

Store is the functional room in the house for keeping food stuffs e.g. Beans, Yams, Rice, yam-flour etc. We collect and keep things for future use in the store.

Food store: It requires daily and weekly cleaning e.g. airing, removal of cobwebs, sweeping, dusting, and arranging the food stuffs

Cleaning/Care of Food store

  • Sweep the store every morning.
  • Arrange food items and containers properly.
  • Clean the store very thoroughly once every week
