CONTENT
- Definition of a formal letter
- Features of a formal letter
Formal letters are also called official or business letters. They are written to people in their official position. They are people we do not know personally, e.g.; Local government chairman, commissioners, principal of your school, managers of organizations, etc.
Features of a Formal Letter
- The writer’s address and date
- The receiver’s designation and address
- Salutation
- Subject heading
- The body of the letter
- The conclusion or the final paragraph
- The ending of the letter/subscript (usually Yours faithfully,)
- Writer’s signature and full name.
Example:
Government Great College, P.O. Box 216, Makaliki, Lagos State. 10th October 2010.
The Chairman, Makaliki Local Government, Lagos State.
Dear Sir,
The Urgent Need to Rehabilitate Makaliki- Ota Road The Body of the letter
Conclusion / Final Paragraph
Yours faithfully, Signature Babatunde Talamo. |

Write a letter to the principal of a neighbouring school, inviting their JSS3 students to a debate organized by your club.
